GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:   This position is responsible for designing, developing, and testing mechanical components, machinery, and equipment using applied knowledge of engineering principles. This may include fabricating, operating, installing, or repairing design products such as motors, instruments, control panels, and other machines.

As a fully competent engineer in all conventional aspects of the subject matter of the functional area of the assignments, plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.  Devises new approaches to problems encountered. 

Requires sufficient professional experience to assure competence as a fully trained worker.  Must be mature in outlook and capable of handling engineering duties and frequent customer contact.  Must be flexible team player capable of performing fast paced technical work with an aggressive and growing division.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES OF THE JOB: 

  • Performs design and technical calculations required for the mechanical design, selection and specification of equipment proposed, with a working knowledge of National Codes.
  • Prepares budget and firm price estimates for the equipment and services of the division.
  • Writes specifications for equipment. Reviews customer drawings and specifications and approves division drawings received from the Watertown Engineering department and from vendors as required.
  • Reviews procurement requisitions and proposals from vendors for technical accuracy, compliance with requirements and economic impact.
  • Acts a Project Manager for projects sold and performs coordination, planning, scheduling, and monitoring of cost schedule status on all assigned projects.
  • Review/evaluate Customer Specifications to select equipment.
  • Monitors project costs with accounting department.
  • Experience with Process Hazard Analysis (PHA)/ HAZOP Risk Analysis and assists Process Engineer and Controls Engineer in participating in clients’ established Risk Assessment Program.
  • Assists in writing and assembling the installation, operation, and maintenance manuals and updates to clients with appropriate bulletins.
  • Provides technical assistance, consulting, and start-up services for installations, including erection supervision for sulfur burners, gas coolers, and absorption equipment as required.
  • Travels as technical support for sales engineers, including troubleshooting and plant start-up. Travel requirements will vary depending on customer demand.  After initial training period, candidate will be required and must be willing to perform service and sales calls and field assignments throughout the world, with the majority of travel assignments e in North America.
  • Assists the division manager in all aspects of planning and implementing the business activities of the division.
  • Provide support to other Corporate Divisions as required

 

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:  Must be able to follow prescribed office policies and procedures and obey all safety rules.  Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and confidential information.  Maintain a business-like professional appearance in manner and attire at all times.  Work well with others, have good communication skills, and be able to make technical and commercial presentations.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:  Four-year college degree in mechanical or chemical engineering. 

  • Must have experience in mechanical engineering, plant operations, or project engineering.
  • Must be highly proficient in Microsoft Productivity Suite software.
  • Must be proficient in AutoCAD and other 3-D imaging software.
  • Must be highly motivated and self-directed, capable of multi-tasking and able to work with minimal supervision

 

EQUIPMENT USED:  Personal computer, cellphone/telephone, automobile.

ON JOB TRAINING:  1-2 years

 

JOB DEMANDS: The position requires being able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time. Also required is the ability to move about both inside an office environment in order to access files, computers, and office machinery; and outside and around a construction jobsite to access areas requiring observation/repairs/construction. Frequent communication is necessary with other staff and customers to relay accurate and timely information. Required to discern potential safety situations. Occasionally needs to ascend/descend ladders, temporary stair towers, platforms, and scaffolding. Occasionally moves in a bent position to enter and exit vessels and may need to move equipment/tools in/out of a vessel. Sales forecasting and presentations are necessary along with meeting deadlines. Overtime may be required. Personal protective equipment must be used as required.  Extensive travel by auto and public transportation required.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Employee will normally be working in an office environment; however, the employee will occasionally be required to take a field assignment with exposure to noise, dust, cold, heat, odors, etc. 

 

ACCOUNTABILITIES:  Responsible for timely and accurate completion of all assigned duties, both individual and departmental.
